Unearthed: 1949 Hudson Commodore Brougham

This 1949 Hudson Commodore Brougham was finally restored decades after the owner's father first bought it.
The Hudson Motor Car Company is sadly long gone. Originally started back in 1909 in Detroit, Michigan, the automaker accomplished a lot in its short history, such as the creation of dual brakes, dashboard oil-pressure andgenerator warning lights, and even the first balanced crankshaft, which paved the way for their "Super Six" straight-six engine. The company reached its peak in 1929 when it, along with their budget brand line, Essex, produced a combined total of 300,000 units in a single year.
It was also a multinational company, with additional production facilities in England and Belgium. By 1936, the automaker introduced its new "radial safety control" suspension, which suspended the live front axle from two steel bars and two leaf springs. The result was what they called the "rhythmic ride" that prevented the bumps and braking that could move the car off course.Car production ceased in 1942 in order to build materials for World War II but began again in 1946. The Commodore, Hudson's largest model, was first launched in 1941, but was ended the next year due to the war. It returned in '46 with the more competitive second generation.

The owner of this '49 Commodore says that his father bought it over 30 years ago. Not long after, it was taken apart and stored in a warehouse for another 22 years before deciding to begin its restoration. The '49 body style was identical to the '48, with only a few minor changes.
This car also has the fastback Brougham style and was also the first car with a unibody design. Other body styles for the Commodore included a traditional sedan, coupe, and convertible. Powered by a 121hp 262 straight-six, it was mated to a three-speed manual with an overdrive unit. Looking at the finished product, we can see how much time, money, and effort went into the car's restoration. The final result is stunning and looks to be an ideal show car. Unfortunately, the last Hudson was built in 1957 with little fanfare due to employees being unaware that the brand would soon bediscontinued.Pictures courtesy of zup28w

In the Spotlight: How to Overkill a Ferrari 458 Italia

Electric lamps are so passé these days. The way of the future is LEDs or Light-emitting diodes that can be found just about everywhere. Lately, LEDsMotorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable ModemMotorola SB6120 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 eXtreme Broadband Cable Modem have taken the automotive industry by storm with carmakers offering them either optionally or standard on most of their models.
But it’s not only regular carmakers that have adopted the new lighting technology; so has the tuning industry which discovered a new toy to attract consumers. The results, as you can see from this example of a Ferrari 458 Italia slathered in LEDs, aren’t always graceful. Video follows after the break.

Ferrari Boss Says No to Electric Models, Endorses Hybrid Tech

Electric vehicles are the new black. Ferrari Boss Says No to Electric Models, Endorses Hybrid TechHowever, Ferrari’s president, Luca di Montezemolo begs to differ. And we are talking about the man responsible for transforming Maranello’s supercars from fragile and non-practical toys for the wealthy to the finest in their class, while also turning the Scuderia’s F1 fortunes around bringing home five consecutive world championships.
“You will never see a Ferrari electric because I don’t believe in electric cars” he told Engagdet. “I don’t think they represent an important step forward for pollution or CO2 or the environment”. Now that’s a rather controversial statement. And how exactly does Montezemolo intend to make Ferrari comply with future regulations? The answer is hybrids.
“We are working very, very hard on the hybrid Ferrari. This should be the future, and I hope in a couple of years you can see it”.
This was pretty much anticipated after Ferrari unveiled the 599-based HY-KERS hybrid concept at the Geneva Motor Show in 2010 and subsequently equipped the California with an auto stop-start system. And our guess is that the 599’s replacement, which is already being tested, will be the first production Ferrari to boast the KERS system.
Montezemolo’s plans to create a direct link between F1, where the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) is already employed, and the company’s road cars. KERS is recovering kinetic energy during braking, that in normal cars is dissipated as heat, and powers an electric motor that charges a battery. In Ferrari’s case, a sophisticated management unit using technology developed for the F1 department controls the system.
The hybrid system in the prototype 599 is very compact, weighting just 40 kg, and is coupled to the rear of the dual-clutch transmission, engaging one of the two primary shafts and ensuring a seamless transition between the gasoline-powered V12 and the electric motor. The hybrid Ferrarican also run on 100% electric power for a short amount of time, powering all of the car’s systems, such as air conditioning, power steering and brakes.
Despite its compact dimensions, the Ferrari KERS system adds another 100HP to the car’s maximum power, further increasing its performance and, at the same time, reducing its CO2 emissions by around 35%.
To this number you can add the 23% reduction in CO2 emissions by the HELE system that was launched last October in the California and includes, apart from the auto stop-start, a range of features such as :intelligent” cooling control, engine-CPU controlled fuel pump and air conditioning, all designed to make the Italian supercar more eco-friendly.
Looks like Montezemolo is right after all: near future Ferraris will pollute less, but still produce that gorgeous V8 or V12 music and not some whining electric sound.
